Huang Qiuyang* and Chen Shaomei* are among the rare painters of the first half of the 20th Century who continued to paint "as if" within the age-old tradition of Chinese landscape. The result is often beautiful in that all the landscape elements and features inherited from previous centuries are recalled in fresh and often bold compositions, with diverse brush techniques applied within the same painting.

See the two paintings attributed to Shitao listed here, most likely works by Huang Qiuyuan 黄秋园 (1914-1979), and the work of Chen Shaomei also listed here.
Contrary to these other two 20th Century painters, Zhang Ding came to traditional Chinese landscape at the end of a long career as a uniquely versatile artist (cartoonist, poster and exhibition designer, visual arts teacher, etc.) This composition in dry ink (
    jiao mo)
experiments with the expressive possibilities of brushwork applied with this particular technique. This innovative contribution complements the long tradition of Chinese dry brush landscape painting (Ni Zan, Huang Gongwang, Hong Ren and Bada Shanren), largely characterized by a minimalist use of the "calligraphic stroke". The visual effects obtained through dry ink are quite different from the ones afforded by traditional liquid ink applications, with a more modern "graphic art" feel. Zhang Ding seems to revel in the varied poetic possibilities offered by his invention. There are two seals and one inscription attributed to this artist and two collectors' seals.
