; Up for sale is the Chinese landscape watercolor painting of cranes and a pine tree symbolizing longevity and peace, dated early 20

century. Signed left in calligraphy and chop sealed
周垣氏
(Chou YuanShi), the
artist was
less known from the end of Qing Dynasty.
The painting in green tones features a hill on which a pine tree is growing, three cranes either flying through or standing under the pine tree, and the Moon. A hill path and flowers are also observed. The cranes with snow white bodies have red crowns and black feathers on the necks, wings and tails, as characteristics of Danding cranes (
丹頂鶴
)
.
The painting is bamboo framed under glass, and further wood framed outside with patterns mimicking pine barks. The back lower right corner shows the information of framework.
Measures: Outer wood frame, 33” long x 22” wide; Inner bamboo frame, 26 ½” long x 18” wide; Artwork, 25 ½” long x 15”. Condition: Very good, with minor chips to the wood frame.
