DETAILS
This ink and color on paper painting by Wang depicts several types of insects and flowers growing in gardens and on mountainsides. The shallow pictorial space is defined by the placement of the stalks, which jut into view from the bottom of the composition, climb up the paper as if ascending a slope, and extend well beyond the top of the picture.
Each page that is opened reveals a journey to different flowers and insects, which include grasshoppers, beetles, wasps, crickets, etc. The mood is further defined by the dramatic use of graded ink washes from pale green to a muted yellow that suggest the veiling effects of a dense mist in early morning.
The flowers are also defined with muted colors and sweeping brush strokes.
Chinese paintings come in a variety of styles. Some are monochrome, and others are very brightly colored. This painting is made in the literati style, meaning that the artist used expressionistic brushwork and was painted as an expression of personal creativity. Other paintings are made in
gong-bi
, or ‘meticulous’ style, utilizing very precise details to appear much more decorative.
The artist has inscribed the painting with his signature and red seal (
chop
).
Over the 60 years he painted, Wang appears to have used several different seals, often called “chops” to sign his works.
This seal is red in color and composed of six characters.
