刘奎龄（1885─1967），字耀辰，号蝶隐，自署种墨草庐主人。中国近现代美术史开派巨匠，动物画一代宗师，被誉为“全能画家”，能工善写，擅长动物、植物、人物画及山水画。他描摹的动物种类之多，范围之广至今无人可追；他善于“势”的营造，绘画作品“虚处不嫌窗框松，实处勿感板结紧”，其画风华滋清润，厚劲灵动，意境深邃。刘奎龄偏居津门一隅，语讷志坚，孤身前行，其创作恰与徐悲鸿的“尽精微，致广大”契合。他钟情于日本绘画，关注横山大观和竹内西凤等代表性人物， 学习借鉴朦胧派、狩野派、大和绘、汉画等古典技法精粹。他是传统派和中西融合派的中坚，他从古典主义、文艺复兴、浪漫主义、现实主义甚至印象派光色运用、油画技术以至夸张变形中吸取营养，他注意到西方现代艺术与中国传统艺术在创造精神上的相似性，他光大了传统写实技法，其艺术风格影响了惠孝同、刘子久、陈少梅、刘继卣、何家英等北派艺术家。其代表作《上林春色图》深得徐悲鸿高度赞扬，并被其赞誉为“当代中国画坛翎毛第一人”。
