Hyakujou Ekai, a Chinese Zen master during the Tang Dynasty, was the chief of the Hyakujou-ji Temple. Hyakujou, the Great Teacher, had the famous phrase ”If you don’t work, you should not eat,” which means “the rich human nature is cultivated through hard work.” This phrase is still used in Zen today.
Tatsuji Shaku is the chief of the Hyakujou-ji Temple. He took an active part in repairing it.
This is a calligraphic version of the phrase by Tatsuji Shaku. His writing, free of idiosyncrasies, makes a very good impression. We can learn about the importance of work from this piece.
