Item Description
here is one Signed Scroll Painting by Ren Bonian (1840-1896), In late Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, the city of Shanghai with its booming economy became a commercial center in China. It gradually replaced the important economic position of Suzhou and Yangzhou. Great painters also came to Shanghai and the last painting school in modern Chinese painting history, the Sea Painting School, emerged, with Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo as representatives. Ren Bonian (1840-1896) was a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. He joined the Taiping Army to fight against the Qing Dynasty and foreign invaders when he was 17, and then roamed about the country with his paintings. He acknowledged Ren Xun as his teacher when he was 19 and later settled down in Shanghai. His painting became mature in his 40 sand he emerged as a famous painter of the period. He painted day and night to make a living, and his health worsened. To relieve his pain, he began to take opium, which further destroyed his health, and he died at the age of 56. Ren learned figure painting from Chen Laolian, flower and bird painting from Xu Xi and Yun Gu, and free sketch painting from Xu Wei and Zhu Da. He also absorbed painting skills from Chinese folk paintings and Western color paintings. He often made sketches to make his painting more realistic. His painting style combined fine brushwork with freehand brushwork, traditional Chinese skills with Western skills, and the work of the Chinese literati with folk paintings. Ren paid attention to observing life and many of his paintings depicted historical stories to reflect his patriotic mood. His representative works include Shepherd Su Wu and Mo Gan Playing Sword.
