Attributed to Shitao, this unique vertical composition displays the muted colours and animated brushwork associated with the famous 17th Century Individualist painter's style, at once superposing and integrating variously treated close-ups of a Spring mountain scenery surrounding a cliff-hanging dwelling.
It bears an inscription, with signature and two seals, attributed to Shitao, and a number of collectors' seals. On the mounting, two colophons are attributed respectively to Wu Dacheng (1835-1902) - a painter and collector - and Zhang Zhiwan (1811-1897) - a painter and politician.
If not by Shitao himself or one of the many assistants he employed after achieving fame during his lifetime, this painting could be the work of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) with calligraphy by Wu Hufan (1894-1968) - in a published video, the latter, who happens to be the grandson of Wu Dacheng mentioned above, has boasted of such collaboration on dozens of imitations of Shitao and Bada Shanren paintings during the 1930s.
